Why You Should Get Travel Insurance
as an Erasmus ?
As young students we think we have the super powers of being made out of steel and that we can take uncalculated risks, forgetting that we are only humans and that accidents and illness can also happen to us. We think that by having a basic social health insurance will be enough to cover our medical expenses, but the problem arrives when something actually happens! Our budget may not cover the treatment needed; some of us are lucky enough that we can to ask for help from our parents, which will help us only by adding a well-deserved scolding session.
I remember one time a friend doing her internship got severely ill while doing her internship, she thought that by going to the pharmacy and drinking homemade remedies will take her illness away, then again the superhero illusion, because of this irresponsible decision she had to go to emergency.
By then she decided not to buy a travel insurance, because she never had any problem while traveling abroad, her decision was based on her many years traveling abroad and not having the need of using medical care. Yes! It can happen! We can be lucky for a period of time, but it doesn’t mean that our luck will last forever. Getting her to have the medical care needed was a mission, she had to wait for really long periods (half a day), in a room full of sick people, risking her of being infected with a new disease, just to get a really fast service from a doctor that thinks that her illness was not worthy of being treated in the emergency room.
The before mentioned situation is only an example of all the trouble that you can get yourself into by not having a travel health insurance. There are many benefits of having a travel insurance when going abroad that we tend to overlook and sometimes even ignore, but it’s something highly relevant that can save us a lot of trouble when the situation calls for it.
When you have travel insurance, you’ll be help faster in private hospitals and clinics, saving you from waiting long hours in a room full on ill people. At the moment you may not think about this possibility, but imagine if you don’t have the time to follow this process thoughtfully, you may have to postponed the treatment in order to take care of other responsibilities, thus having to sacrifice your own health in return.
Thanks to travel insurance you will be independent from your parents help, thus giving them a peace of mind when you’re abroad. It’s difficult to explain to your parents the when something dangerous happens, and that you have no other choice to do otherwise, it’s quite a big deal that they have to deal with the consequences of your irresponsible behavior.
Most travel insurances, like the one we provide here in Interrex (click HERE for more info), include informational assistance services that will guide you through in case something happens. Better to ask a professional that your fellow Erasmus colleagues which in many cases may have the superhero illusion as well.
When going abroad you’ll most probably be in a country that they speak a different language than yours, a place where the laws differ from what you’re used to, thus the paperwork can be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have local friends to help you out. Having an insurance will help you with this process, making it easier for you to get all the paperwork done without worrying about anything else than just to get better.
Studying abroad brings a lot of adventures like going to the beach, exploring new places, the excitement will definitely drive our attention away from safety, there has been many cases when students lose their camera, their wallets, their expensive phones and this can cause a lot of discomfort, especially if you decided to take a one weekend trip away from your Erasmus city. Having Insurance will help you secure your items, and save you from the trouble and headaches these situations may bring.
